Westminster Under School is a friendly and welcoming place to work, with a real sense of community. Staff members quickly become part of the rhythm of life, both inside and outside the classroom. Social events are regular and varied, with plenty of opportunity to socialise outside working hours. Support staff as much as teaching staff are encouraged to embrace the School’s day-to-day activities, whether that be attending a concert or a sports fixture.

It is a particularly exciting and significant time to be joining Westminster. As part of Westminster Under School and Westminster School’s move to become fully co-educational, girls will be joining the Under School for the first time in 2026, at the 7+ and 11+ entry points, and a brand new pre-prep will open for boys and girls at the 4+ entry point. In 2028, girls will be joining at 13+ at Westminster School.

The Sports Department at Westminster Under School is a busy and exciting place to be. Children at the School enjoy weekly PE lessons as part of the curriculum, most year groups have weekly swimming lessons, and all year groups have two Games sessions per week. Across from the School at Vincent Square, there are 13 acres of grass-playing fields, which include three full-sized football pitches, two grass cricket wickets, five tennis courts, and twelve outdoor table tennis tables. The School’s Sports Centre offers exceptional indoor facilities including a hall large enough for five badminton courts, a full-sized basketball court, a climbing wall, two table tennis areas, a dance studio, a martial arts dojo, and a rowing suite.

The role
Westminster Under School is looking for an experienced, well-qualified and inspirational Teacher of PE to play a pivotal role in providing an outstanding co-educational PE, Games and sports programme across the Under School, with a focus on the development of Girls’ Games. The successful applicant will promote sporting excellence and physical literacy, while ensuring high levels of participation, inclusivity, and enjoyment for all pupils. They will plan and deliver high-quality co-educational PE lessons from Early Years, and Key Stages 1, 2, and 3, and  girls’ Games sessions for the major girls’ sports (netball, hockey, football and cricket). The Teacher of PE will carry out a range of formative assessments of pupils’ attainment to acknowledge and inform progress. They will also be responsible for organising and managing school teams and fixtures, and sports trips and tours, and for supporting non-PE specialists and Games staff in their teaching and coaching roles.

A significant part of the role will be dedicated to the development of the short, medium, and long-term vision of the department, to implement a strategic vision for the PE and Games department that is aligned with the School’s values and co-curricular aims. Attendance at departmental meetings will, therefore, be required to contribute to whole-school sports planning.

The ideal candidate will hold a degree or equivalent in Physical Education or a related field, and Qualified Teacher Status. They will have taught PE to girls in a co-educational environment, and will possess a high level of sporting and / or coaching experience, passion for sport and commitment to pupil wellbeing and development. Strong leadership acumen is integral to this role, as are organisational and problem-solving skills. The Teacher of PE will be an excellent communicator who has the ability to work effectively and productively with a big and diverse department. They will also be a strategic thinker, who can see the bigger picture and help work towards the School’s goals, and someone who can actively stay abreast of best practice in PE and sports education, and suggest and implement relevant pedagogical approaches.

This is a full-time and permanent role. The Teacher of PE and Girls’ Games will be expected to attend lunchtime practices, fixtures (including on Saturdays), and events as required.
