“A display of great strength in breadth” – GCSE pupils gain excellent results in 25 different subjects
22 August 2024

More than three-quarters of all examinations in 2024 receive the highest 9 Grade, in disciplines from maths and English to astronomy and Japanese

On the eve of the new school year and the start of sixth form, Westminster’s 128 GCSE exam pupils have received an excellent set of results.

Top-line figures are that 94% of all grades awarded were at 9 or 8, equivalent to an A*, with 77% at the highest 9 grade alone.

The ‘A grade’ (9-7) percentage is at just under 99%.

Exam papers in 25 different subjects were sat, 11 of which received only 9/8 grades. As well as the core subjects of English, maths and the sciences, and the most popular option subjects such as history, geography, art, music and computer science, this was a particularly strong year for the variety of languages: modern – Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish, as well as ancient – Greek and Latin.

The STEM subjects gained strong results as ever – 83% 9 grades across biology, chemistry and physics, and 95% 9 and 100% 9/8 in mathematics.

There was much individual success. 117 pupils received at least ten 9-7 grades, of whom 94 achieved just 9/8s, and 43 just 9s. Two pupils each received 12 straight 9s and one received 13 9s.

Head Master, Dr Gary Savage, said: “Following quickly on from an excellent set of A Level results, this year’s GCSEs are hugely pleasing – top grades achieved across a vast range of subjects – a display of great strength in breadth.

“I hope all our pupils (as well as their teachers) take time to enjoy this success, and feel ready and eager to embark on their A Level studies – we look forward to welcoming them back for their final two years at Westminster, and the even more exciting learning that is to come.”
