Westminster Under School is made up of 292 pupils, 43 teaching staff and 50 support staff. The Under School is a friendly and welcoming place to work, there is a real sense of community and staff members quickly become part of the rhythm of life, both inside and outside the classroom. Social events are regular and varied, and staff members are encouraged to embrace the School’s day-to-day activities, whether that be attending a concert or a sports fixture.
The role
We are looking for a bright, caring and positive Teaching Assistant who enjoys working with children to help with lesson preparation and provide extra support for pupils, both individually and within small groups. The successful candidate will be part of a friendly team responsible for one Year 3 and two Year 4 classes, and will embrace being involved in all aspects of busy school life, helping with both the pastoral and academic development of pupils. Outside of lessons, the Teaching Assistant will supervise pupils at break and lunch times and on educational visits. They will also fulfil a range of administrative tasks, such as creating displays and preparing inspiring, fun resources. In addition, they will be expected to help out with school trips and outings, drama productions and at school events.
This is an exciting time to join the Under School, as we look forward to expansion to become a co-educational school for children aged four to 13 from September 2026. A key part of this role over the next year will, therefore, be to support the transition to welcoming girls, and help Junior Teachers positively contribute to the co-educational environment. The role may also subsequently involve supporting younger children and working across the 4-8 age range.
The ideal applicant will have experience of managing pupil behaviour and a knowledge of safeguarding. They will show patience, and will be able to remain calm under pressure and to use initiative, especially when required to make quick decisions. The applicant will be highly organised with excellent verbal and written communication, and numeracy skills. Enthusiasm and a warm and cheerful disposition are key attributes for the role.
