The benefits of pursuing a 'pragmatic' relationship with China have been set out at Westminster, as former Business Secretary Sir Vince Cable gave a Locke Lecture to the School.
Upper School pupils have had the opportunity to hear the esteemed politician and economist talk about his recently published book ‘The Chinese Conundrum: Engagement or Conflict’. After outlining a brief history of Chinese economic progress, Sir Vince addressed what he considers to be some of the unhelpful hostilities towards the current Chinese leadership, noting instead that a pragmatic relationship between the UK and China has yielded greater fruit.
He ended by asking questions of his audience, leading them to reflect on the future of the Western liberal order and China, and whether the West will find itself discouraged by the common ‘red button’ issues that have prevented others from forming a successful relationship with China.
