An Audience with Baroness Lawrence
Yesterday, Upper School pupils and other members of the Westminster School community and Harris Westminster Sixth Form had the opportunity to hear Baroness Doreen Lawrence of Clarendon address the topic of ‘Stephen’s Legacy and the path still to be travelled’ in a packed John Locke Lecture.
Baroness Lawrence spoke of the pain of her experience and the transformative change that she has tried to elicit through her life of public service – a life that she would never have chosen for herself, but one that has been born out of her tragedy. Her audience was captivated, as we reflected on racist attitudes that remain embedded at societal and institutional levels. We were reminded that the process of change begins with each of us, through education but most of all through the willingness to tackle and call out the views that have no place in civilised society; a journey that continues.
