“You transported us to another realm” – orchestras and concerto soloist praised by rapt audience
1 December 2023

Westminster’s annual Smith Square concert showcased the skills of dozens of orchestral players, with music from Saint-Saens to the silver screen.

The concert at St John’s Smith Square at the end of November began with two of the most popular works of film composer John Williams: the themes from both Superman and Star Wars, played by the Lower School Orchestra.

Eliza (Remove, RR) then took to the stage to give a ‘transportingly good’ performance of Saint-Saëns’ second piano concerto, backed by the School Symphony Orchestra.

After the interval, the Symphony Orchestra returned to play Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony, one of the most important works in American classical music.

After the concert, the audience was full of praise.

Head Master, Dr Gary Savage, said: “What a fantastic evening! Both the junior and senior orchestras were on sparkling form. Superbly conducted and led, they took us on a journey through some iconic, stirring and beautiful music which left us all enraptured and heart-warmed on a cold November night. Eliza was transportingly good playing the Saint-Saens, just one of many memorable aspects of a thoroughly impressive and enjoyable concert. Well done to all.”

Another listener commented: “Congratulations on an extraordinary, powerful and joyful concert at St John’s last night! You transported us to another realm. I was inspired, energised and you could tangibly feel the dedication and passion in the room.”

Another said: “It really was a privilege to be in the audience, what amazing young people and musicians, I was especially blown away by Eliza – what a talented pianist.”
